Check Vehicle Insurance Status Online
Verify your motor vehicle insurance status through Vahan e-Services and IIB portal. Check policy validity, coverage details, and expiry date online.
Having valid motor vehicle insurance is not just a legal requirement in India — it is essential financial protection against accidents, theft, and third-party liability. As per the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, every vehicle plying on Indian roads must have at least a third-party insurance policy. Driving without valid insurance can result in e-Challans of Rs. 2,000 to Rs. 4,000 for the first offence, and higher penalties for subsequent offences, along with potential imprisonment.
Checking your vehicle insurance status regularly ensures that your policy has not expired and that your coverage is active. Many vehicle owners forget their insurance renewal dates and end up driving uninsured, which can lead to heavy fines and, more importantly, financial exposure in case of an accident. The Insurance Information Bureau (IIB) of India and the Vahan portal make it easy to verify your insurance status online in just a few clicks.
Additionally, when buying a used vehicle, it is crucial to verify the existing insurance policy details to ensure the coverage is valid and the policy can be transferred to your name. The online insurance check tools help you verify the policy number, insurer name, policy type, and validity period before completing the purchase.
There are two primary ways to check your vehicle insurance status online — through the IIB portal and through the Vahan e-Services portal:
Method 1: Insurance Information Bureau (IIB) Portal
- Visit IIB Portal: Go to iib.gov.in
- Click on "Quick Insurance Status": Navigate to the insurance status verification section.
- Enter Vehicle Details: Provide your vehicle registration number and other required details such as engine number or chassis number.
- View Insurance Details: The portal will display your current insurance policy details including insurer name, policy number, type (comprehensive or third-party), and validity period.
Method 2: Vahan e-Services Portal
- Visit Vahan Portal: Go to parivahan.gov.in
- Select "Know Your Vehicle Details": Navigate to the vehicle details section.
- Enter Registration Number: Type your vehicle registration number and complete the captcha verification.
- Check Insurance Status: The system will display your vehicle details including the current insurance status and policy validity.
