Road tax, also known as motor vehicle tax, is a mandatory tax levied by state governments on all motor vehicles registered within their jurisdiction. The tax is calculated based on various factors including the vehicle's ex-showroom price, type (two-wheeler, four-wheeler, commercial), engine capacity, fuel type, and age. Road tax rates vary significantly from state to state, with some states charging a one-time lifetime tax and others requiring annual payments.

The road tax can range from 3% to over 20% of the vehicle's ex-showroom price depending on the state and vehicle category. For example, Karnataka has some of the highest road tax rates in India (up to 18% for four-wheelers), while states like Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand have relatively lower rates. Electric vehicles (EVs) are exempt from road tax in many states as part of the government's push for clean mobility.

Road tax must be paid at the time of vehicle registration. If you move to a different state with your vehicle, you may need to pay the road tax difference in the new state and re-register the vehicle within 12 months. Failing to pay road tax can result in penalties and the vehicle being considered unregistered, which attracts fines under the Motor Vehicles Act.
