New Vehicle Registration Online

Every motor vehicle in India must be registered with the Regional Transport Office (RTO) before it can be driven on public roads. The Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 makes vehicle registration mandatory, and driving an unregistered vehicle is a punishable offence with fines up to Rs. 5,000. The registration process is handled through the Vahan system, which is the centralised vehicle registration database maintained by MoRTH.
When you purchase a new vehicle from a dealer, the dealer typically handles the temporary registration and assists with the permanent registration process. However, understanding the complete process helps you ensure that everything is done correctly and on time. Temporary registration is valid for 30 days, within which you must complete the permanent registration at your local RTO.
The entire registration process involves document submission, fee payment, vehicle inspection, and RC issuance. Most of the initial steps can now be completed online through the Vahan Parivahan portal, reducing the need for multiple RTO visits. The registration number assigned to your vehicle is unique and remains with the vehicle for its lifetime unless you apply for a fancy or choice number.
