The primary purpose of mParivahan is to digitize essential transport documents like Driving License and Registration Certificate. You can carry legally valid digital copies on your smartphone, eliminating the need for physical documents while driving.
Beyond document storage, mParivahan serves as a comprehensive platform for transport services. Users can check e-Challan status, pay traffic fines, search vehicle details, and access RTO services online. It integrates seamlessly with Parivahan Sewa and Sarathi Parivahan portals.
Data Source: Vahan & Sarathi Databases
All data in mParivahan comes directly from the government’s central databases — Vahan for vehicles and Sarathi for driving licenses. This ensures accuracy and reliability of every piece of information shown in the app.
As part of India’s push toward digital governance, mParivahan represents a significant step in making transport services more accessible. The app supports the vision of “Minimum Government, Maximum Governance” by reducing RTO visits and enabling citizens to access services from home.
The latest version, NextGen mParivahan, features a redesigned interface that is faster and more intuitive. It supports multiple languages including Hindi and English. The app includes biometric authentication (fingerprint or face recognition) and PIN-based security.
End-to-End Encryption
All data transmission is encrypted between your device and government servers. Your personal info stays protected.
Biometric Security
Protect documents with fingerprint, face recognition, or PIN. No one can access your DL/RC without authentication.
The impact of mParivahan on India’s transport ecosystem has been substantial. Before the app, citizens had to make multiple RTO visits for simple tasks. Now these services are available 24/7 from any location, dramatically reducing time spent on transport paperwork.
Looking ahead, mParivahan is expected to add Aadhaar-based authentication, real-time traffic updates, FASTag integration, and connected vehicle services. These features will further solidify its position as India’s most comprehensive transport management app.

Digital Driving License (DL) on mParivahan
ड्राइविंग लाइसेंस — सरथी परिवहन से जुड़ा
The Digital Driving License is one of the most popular features of the mParivahan app. It’s not just a scan of your physical license — it’s a fully verified, government-issued digital document with the same legal validity as your physical DL.
To create your virtual DL, open mParivahan and tap "Add DL". Enter your DL number. The app connects to the Sarathi database and fetches your photo, name, vehicle classes, and validity dates. Your digital DL is generated with a QR code for instant authentication.
Legally Valid
Recognized under Motor Vehicles Act & IT Act 2000 across all Indian states.
QR Verified
Dynamic QR code linked directly to the Sarathi database for instant verification.
Real-time Status
Shows current validity, suspension, or revocation status from Sarathi Parivahan.
Always Available
Access your DL anytime, even without internet connection. Works offline.
The digital DL eliminates the need to carry your physical license while driving. Traffic police can verify it by scanning the QR code, which confirms authenticity directly from the government database. This reduces fake license usage significantly.
The QR code on the digital DL is dynamically generated and encrypted. Even if someone screenshots your DL, the verification scan will reveal discrepancies. The app periodically refreshes the QR code to prevent screenshot-based fraud.
The adoption of digital DL through mParivahan has also streamlined international driving permit applications and interstate license transfers. While these services still require RTO visits, having your digital DL readily available makes the process smoother.
Vehicle Registration Certificate (RC) on mParivahan
वाहन पंजीकरण प्रमाणपत्र
The Vehicle Registration Certificate (RC) is one of the most important documents for any vehicle owner. mParivahan lets you create a digital RC that is legally valid and can be presented to authorities in place of the physical document.
To add your RC, open mParivahan and navigate to "Add RC". Enter your vehicle registration number. The app searches the Vahan database and displays your vehicle details. Verify the information and confirm to add the virtual RC.

The virtual RC is invaluable when buying a used vehicle. You can verify ownership, check pending challans, confirm insurance status, and validate the fitness certificate — all before making the purchase.
While the virtual RC is legally valid for traffic checks and routine verification, the physical RC is still needed for selling the vehicle, transferring ownership, or applying for a loan. Keep your physical RC safely at home for these transactions.
mParivahan sends notifications before important renewal dates. Private vehicle registration is valid for 15 years, then needs renewal every 5 years. Driving with expired registration can result in heavy fines or vehicle seizure.
For commercial vehicle owners, the virtual RC is particularly valuable. It helps manage fitness certificates, road tax, permits, and insurance all in one place. Fleet managers can track compliance status of all vehicles from a single dashboard.

Pro Tip: Keep digital copies of all documents in DigiLocker before applying on Sarathi Parivahan. This speeds up the verification process and reduces the need for physical document submission at the RTO.
mParivahan vs DigiLocker — Which One Should You Use?
Both mParivahan and DigiLocker are Government of India apps for storing digital DL and RC. However, they serve different purposes and understanding the differences helps you make the most of both.
The key advantage of mParivahan is its specialized focus on transport services. It offers e-Challan checking and payment, vehicle search, Sarathi Parivahan access, and real-time document verification — features DigiLocker doesn’t have.
DigiLocker offers broader document storage including educational certificates, identity cards, and health records. For users who need a single app for all government documents, DigiLocker is better. Using both apps together provides the best experience.
Recommendation: Use mParivahan as your primary transport app for digital DL/RC, e-Challan, and RTO services. Keep DigiLocker as a backup for document storage and accessing non-transport government services.
State-wise RTO Services Available on mParivahan
mParivahan provides access to Parivahan Sewa across all 36 states and union territories of India.
The mParivahan app connects to the Vahan and Sarathi databases of all Indian states. Regardless of which state issued your DL or where your vehicle is registered, you can access documents and services through the app. It supports all major RTO services including new license application, renewal, duplicate issuance, vehicle registration, and ownership transfer.
Important Legal Information About Digital Documents
The legal framework for digital documents in India is established by the Information Technology Act, 2000 (IT Act). Section 4 of the IT Act states that where any law requires information in writing, such requirement is satisfied if the information is available in electronic form.
The Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2019 further strengthened digital document validity. Section 139 recognizes electronic forms of DL and RC as valid. MoRTH has directed all state transport departments to accept digital documents from mParivahan and DigiLocker.
IT Act 2000 — Section 4
Electronic records have the same legal validity as physical documents when stored in government-approved platforms like mParivahan.
MV Act 2019 — Section 139
Electronic forms of driving licenses and registration certificates are valid for all purposes under the Motor Vehicles Act.
Only documents fetched from government databases (Vahan and Sarathi) with digitally signed QR codes are legally valid. Simply taking a photo of your DL or RC is not accepted by traffic police or authorities.
You have the right to present digital documents from government-approved platforms. However, your phone must be charged and functional during verification. Attempting to present forged digital documents is a criminal offense under Section 66 of the IT Act.
