Apply for Learning Licence (LL) Online

A Learning Licence (LL) or Learner's Licence is a temporary licence issued by the Regional Transport Office (RTO) that allows you to practice driving on public roads under certain conditions. It is the first step towards obtaining a permanent Driving Licence in India. The Learning Licence is valid for 6 months from the date of issue, and you must hold it for at least 30 days before applying for a permanent Driving Licence.

With a Learning Licence, you can drive a vehicle only under the supervision of a person holding a valid permanent Driving Licence. The vehicle must display a prominent "L" sign (red letter L on a white background) on both the front and rear. You are not allowed to drive on highways or carry passengers other than the supervising licence holder. These restrictions are designed to ensure safety while you learn to drive.

The LL application process has been fully digitised through the Sarathi Parivahan portal, allowing you to apply online, book a test slot, and pay fees without visiting the RTO multiple times. The learning licence test covers basic traffic rules, road signs, and driving regulations, and can be taken at the RTO on your scheduled date.

Before applying for a Learning Licence, make sure you meet the following eligibility criteria:

• Age: Minimum 16 years for gearless two-wheelers (50cc), 18 years for geared two-wheelers and light motor vehicles, 20 years for commercial vehicles.
• Medical Fitness: You must be medically fit to drive. A medical certificate (Form 1A) is required for applicants above 40 years or those applying for commercial vehicle licences.
• No Disqualification: You should not have been disqualified from holding a driving licence by any court in India.
• Knowledge of Traffic Rules: Basic understanding of traffic rules, road signs, and signals is required to pass the learning licence test.
• Documents: Valid proof of age, proof of address, passport-size photographs, and medical certificate (if applicable).

The Learning Licence test consists of multiple-choice questions about traffic rules, road signs, and driving regulations. You must score at least 60% (12 out of 20 questions) to pass. The test is conducted on a computer at the RTO. You can practice for the test using the LLR Practice Test on our website, which contains questions similar to those asked in the actual RTO test.

The questions cover topics such as traffic signals and signs, right-of-way rules, speed limits, parking regulations, lane discipline, and basic vehicle mechanics. Preparing thoroughly for this test is important as it forms the foundation of safe driving knowledge. Many RTOs also provide a question bank that you can study before appearing for the test.
