Apply for Driving Licence (DL) Online

Complete guide to applying for a permanent Driving Licence through Sarathi Parivahan portal. Learn about eligibility, documents, driving test, and application process.

How to Apply for Driving Licence Online

Applying for a permanent Driving Licence (DL) online through the Sarathi Parivahan portal is a streamlined process. After holding a Learning Licence for the required period (minimum 30 days), you can apply for a permanent DL. The entire process from application to receiving your DL can be completed online, including slot booking for the driving test and fee payment.

The Driving Licence is issued by the Regional Transport Office (RTO) and is a mandatory document for driving any motor vehicle on Indian roads. It contains your personal details, photograph, signature, and the class of vehicles you are authorised to drive. A valid DL is also accepted as a proof of identity and address across India.

Before applying, ensure that your Learning Licence is still valid and has been held for at least 30 days. The LL should not have expired, as you will need to present it during the driving test. If your LL has expired, you will need to apply for a new one before proceeding with the DL application.

Step-by-Step DL Application Process
  1. Visit Sarathi Parivahan: Go to parivahan.gov.in and select your state to access the Sarathi portal.
  2. Click on "New Driving Licence": Navigate to "Driving Licence Related Services" and select "Apply for New Driving Licence."
  3. Enter LL Number: Provide your Learning Licence number and date of birth to fetch your LL details from the Sarathi database.
  4. Fill Application Form: Complete the application form with your personal details, vehicle class preferences, and other required information.
  5. Upload Documents: Upload scanned copies of required documents including proof of age, proof of address, passport-size photographs, medical certificate (Form 1A if applicable), and your Learning Licence.
  6. Book Driving Test Slot: Select a convenient date and time for your driving test at the RTO. Slots are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
  7. Pay Fee Online: Pay the DL application fee (typically Rs. 200-500 depending on vehicle class and state) through the online payment gateway.
  8. Appear for Driving Test: Visit the RTO on your scheduled date with all original documents and your vehicle (of the class you are applying for). The test includes a practical driving assessment and in some states, an additional theory test.
  9. Receive DL: After passing the driving test, your DL will be printed and dispatched to your registered address via India Post within 7-15 working days.
