Apply for Driving Licence Renewal Online
Complete guide to renewing your Driving Licence online through Sarathi Parivahan. Learn about the renewal process, grace period, documents, and fees.
A Driving Licence in India is typically valid for 20 years or until the holder reaches the age of 50, whichever is earlier. For commercial vehicle licences, the validity is shorter (usually 3-5 years). When your DL approaches its expiry date, you must apply for renewal to continue driving legally. The renewal process can be initiated up to 30 days before the expiry date, and there is a grace period of 30 days after expiry during which you can renew without additional penalties.
Driving with an expired licence is an offence under the Motor Vehicles Act and can result in an e-Challan of Rs. 5,000. Additionally, if you are involved in an accident while driving with an expired licence, your insurance claim may be rejected. Therefore, it is important to renew your DL well before the expiry date to avoid any legal or financial complications.
The DL renewal process has been made fully online through the Sarathi Parivahan portal. You can submit your application, upload documents, and pay fees online. You will need to visit the RTO only for a medical check-up and to collect your renewed DL if it is not delivered by post.
