Understanding RTO Codes

Every vehicle registration number in India follows a standard format: XX-00-XX-0000. The first two letters represent the state or union territory code. The next two digits represent the specific RTO office (district/city code) within that state. This is followed by one or two letters and then a four-digit number that uniquely identifies the vehicle. For example, in MH-01-AB-1234, MH stands for Maharashtra, 01 is the Mumbai Central RTO code, AB is the series, and 1234 is the vehicle number.

Understanding RTO codes helps you identify the state and city where a vehicle is registered. This is useful when buying a used vehicle from another state, as you may need to re-register it in your state. It also helps in verifying the authenticity of vehicle documents and identifying vehicles from other states on the road. The RTO code system is standardised across India by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
